Brain & Nervous System Care

Specialist Care for the Brain, Nerves and Spinal Cord

Neurological conditions rarely feel like the kind of problem a general clinic can fully resolve. A migraine that keeps coming back, sudden numbness in a hand, a tremor that was not there last year, a memory that is not quite what it used to be — each of these deserves specialist evaluation rather than reassurance and a generic prescription. The ODC Specialised Neurology Clinic exists to deliver that evaluation, with consultants whose training is matched to the complexity of the questions patients bring through the door.

Whether you are managing chronic epilepsy, recovering after a stroke, investigating persistent headaches, or facing a new diagnosis of Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis, the care pathway at our clinic is built around the same idea — accurate diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, and follow-up that does not stop after the first visit. We work alongside on-site radiology and laboratory services so the diagnostic loop closes within days, not weeks.

01
Stroke & Brain Care

Stroke, Brain Injury & Cognitive Disorders

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of disability across Pakistan, and the difference between a good and a poor outcome is often measured in hours. Our neurology clinic provides post-stroke evaluation, secondary prevention planning, and long-term follow-up for patients who have survived an ischaemic or haemorrhagic event. Where acute intervention has already taken place at a tertiary centre, we coordinate the rehabilitation and risk-factor management that protects against the second event — blood pressure control, anticoagulation, statin therapy, lifestyle adjustment.

Beyond stroke, our consultants evaluate traumatic brain injury, suspected brain tumours, dementia, mild cognitive impairment and the cognitive changes that develop after illness or surgery. Imaging is arranged on-site through our radiology department, with MRI and CT studies typically completed and reported within 24 hours so that diagnosis does not stall.

Investigating Neurological Symptoms with Precision

Neurology is a discipline of careful examination supported by targeted investigations. The wrong test ordered at the wrong time delays diagnosis and increases cost without improving the outcome. Our consultants begin every consultation with a structured neurological examination, and request only the investigations that are likely to change management — whether that is an MRI scan, an electroencephalogram, a nerve conduction study, or a focused blood panel for treatable causes of neuropathy and cognitive decline.

MRI & CT Brain

On-site high-resolution imaging for stroke, tumour, MS plaques and structural brain lesions.

EEG & Seizure Workup

Electroencephalography for epilepsy diagnosis, seizure classification and treatment response.

Nerve Conduction Studies

NCS and EMG referral for neuropathy, radiculopathy and neuromuscular disease assessment.

Laboratory Workup

Vitamin B12, thyroid, autoimmune and metabolic panels for treatable neurological causes.

Long-Term Neurology

Living With Parkinson's, Alzheimer's & Multiple Sclerosis

Neurodegenerative disease is rarely a one-appointment problem. Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease all evolve over years, and the care that matters most is the kind that adapts as the condition progresses. Our consultants provide structured long-term follow-up rather than one-off prescriptions, adjusting therapy as symptoms change and supporting both patients and their families through the practical realities of progressive illness.

For Parkinson's disease we focus on optimising levodopa therapy, managing motor fluctuations and addressing non-motor symptoms like sleep disturbance and constipation that often go untreated. For Alzheimer's and dementia we evaluate cognitive function, exclude treatable causes, and support family members with practical guidance on care planning. For multiple sclerosis we coordinate disease-modifying therapy, monitor MRI progression, and manage relapses promptly when they occur.

Headache & Migraine — Beyond Painkillers

Headaches are one of the most common reasons people see a neurologist, and one of the most under-treated. Patients have often spent years cycling through over-the-counter painkillers, gradually increasing the dose, before they discover that the headaches are themselves being driven by the medications meant to relieve them. Our clinic offers structured headache evaluation — distinguishing migraine from tension-type headache, identifying cluster headache, ruling out the rare secondary causes, and building a treatment plan that combines preventive therapy with effective acute treatment.

For patients with chronic migraine we offer preventive options including beta-blockers, topiramate, amitriptyline and newer agents where appropriate. Trigger identification, lifestyle modification, and a written headache diary are part of the management plan from the first visit. The aim is not just to reduce attacks but to reduce dependence on acute medication and restore function to daily life.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a neurologist?
You should see a neurologist for persistent headaches or migraines, recurrent seizures, sudden weakness or numbness, difficulty with balance or coordination, memory problems, tremors, chronic dizziness, unexplained numbness or tingling, and after any suspected stroke or transient ischaemic attack.
What is the difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon?
A neurologist diagnoses and medically treats conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves without performing surgery — including epilepsy, stroke, migraine and Parkinson's disease. A neurosurgeon performs surgical procedures on the brain and spine. At ODC our neurologists handle medical neurology and refer onward when surgical intervention is required.
Can migraines be cured permanently?
Migraines cannot always be cured permanently, but in most patients the frequency and severity can be reduced significantly with the right combination of preventive medication, trigger identification, lifestyle modification and acute treatment for breakthrough attacks. Many patients achieve months of remission with structured management.
Is epilepsy a lifelong condition?
Some types of epilepsy resolve in childhood while others require long-term treatment. Around 70 percent of people with epilepsy become seizure-free with appropriate anti-epileptic medication, and many can eventually reduce or stop treatment under specialist supervision. Lifelong follow-up is recommended even after seizures stop.
What tests does a neurologist usually order?
Common neurology investigations include MRI or CT brain imaging, electroencephalogram (EEG) for seizure assessment, nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) for nerve and muscle disorders, blood tests for vitamin deficiencies and autoimmune markers, and lumbar puncture when central nervous system infection or inflammation is suspected.
Can Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease be reversed?
Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease cannot currently be reversed, but symptoms can be controlled and disease progression slowed with appropriate medication, rehabilitation and supportive care. Early diagnosis allows the best long-term outcomes, which is why specialist evaluation is recommended at the first signs of tremor, memory loss or movement disorder.
What is the consultation fee for a neurologist at ODC?
Consultation with Dr. Waleed Shahzad is Rs. 3,000 and with Dr. Riaz Mahmood is Rs. 2,500. Test and investigation costs are confirmed at the time of booking with no hidden charges.
